Previously published by Boston College, Kevin Killelea, an alumnus of BC's Carroll School of Management, shares how his MBA helped him advance his career in financial services. He also provides advice for future students regarding the importance of MBA internships.

Name: Kevin Killelea

School: MBA, Carroll School of Management, Boston College

Profession: Financial Leadership Program Project Manager, Fidelity Investments

After earning a degree in history from Providence College, Kevin Killelea, BC MBA ’15, entered the world of financial services with Brown Brothers Harriman, and eventually moved to Cambridge Associates. He spent four years in the financial services industry as an analyst for large institutional clients, working on small teams with top consultants, and providing analytics for client presentations.

Though he was moving up within his firms and gaining responsibilities in each new position, Kevin soon realized that without an advanced degree he would quickly reach a ceiling in his career. Having an undergraduate degree was no longer sufficient to reach his career goals; an MBA was the logical next step to success.

“Growing up in Massachusetts, I always understood the value of the Boston College brand and the strength of the Carroll School,” says Kevin. Choosing a university with a strong alumni network and reputation for the MBA program was important to him. The BC MBA Program not only met these criteria, it exceeded Kevin's expectations. Kevin was surprised to encounter such a close cohort of peers in the BC MBA program, “as we move forward in our career, I know our network will help each other to succeed.”

Throughout his studies at Boston College, Kevin took advantage of the Career Strategies Office to acquire an internship and then full time employment. The Career Strategies Office and his personal adviser Marilyn Eckelman, Assistant Dean for Career Development, helped Kevin in every step of the process to secure his internship with Credit Suisse--a private banking company--after his first year in the program. Kevin says Marilyn and the Career Strategies Office were also instrumental in helping him land his position in the Financial Leadership Program at Fidelty after graduation. “Marilyn connected me with several current FLP participants, who I met with and/or spoke to over the phone to learn about the program and present my interest in the role.”

For future applicants, Kevin recommends outlining short and long term career goals before entering the program because the internship search begins early and the program itself is demanding.
